Meat Ant
(Iridomyrmex purpureus)
Also known as gravel ant or southern meat ant, is a species of ant endemic to Australia. A member of the genus Iridomyrmex.
Iridomyrmex is a genus of ants called rainbow ants referring to their blue-green iridescent sheen.
Famous for being able to expertly take care of animal carcasses in a short time, meat ant mounds are perfect for disposal of a carcass and reduce it to clean bone in a matter of weeks.
The meat ant is associated with many common names due to its appearance, nest-building behaviour and abundance, of which its specific name, purpureus, refers to its coloured appearance.
